Hey everyone, Late for the Train here - it's Week 1 of Fiddle Tune Tuesdays!
Every Tuesday, Dave & Laura will be bringing you a different tune (or occasionally song) from around the world. We both love to adventure and meet new people through music, but it looks like travel is on hold for a while yet, so we thought we'd explore different cultures via fiddle tunes instead!
Today's tune is "Ella Rose's Reel" by J.J. Chaisson. Dave learned this tune from J.J. in 2014 at the Celtic Colours International Festival on Cape Breton Island, Canada. Though it sounds a lot like other Cape Breton tunes, it's actually from nearby Prince Edward Island, where J.J. (aka The Fiddling Fisherman) grew up and still lives with his family.
He wrote this lovely tune for his daughter, Ella Rose. It highlights a bow technique sometimes called a "cut," where you play a triplet (3 notes) lightning fast to create a bouncy, percussive quality. If you'd like to hear J.J. play it as it was written (you do), it is recorded on a CD of tunes he released called "The Gift." You can reach out to him on his website to get a copy.
Thank you J.J. for such a great tune!
All our love,
Late for the Train
p.s. We'll be doing these every week, so if you have suggestions for a region or a specific tune, send them our way!
